Dear Parents,

Quite a lot of paper will be on its way to you today. Under the terms of the Data Protection Act, we are instructed to send to each parent a Fair Processing Notice. We have reduced its size and managed to fit it onto one sheet of A4. It should arrive home with this Beacon.

Top Sports Honour Again For Lower Park
An image of a rosette
I am absolutely delighted to tell you we have just learned that we have been awarded the Active Mark for Sport once again. This is awarded to schools who are judged as having the highest standards of sport in the curriculum and after school activities. There is no longer a ‘colour’ associated with the award but it is very pleasing to have gained the award for a second time. Particular credit must go to Mr Parry, our PE co-ordinator, whose enthusiasm for all things ‘sports’ has been a major factor in gaining this achievement. Credit must also be given to the staff for maintaining their high standards in PE and Games teaching and after school club activities.

New Site Maintenance
Officer
Following the announcement in last week’s Beacon that Mrs Beaumont is retiring at the end of this half term, I am pleased to inform you that Mr Andrew Banks will commence as our new Site Maintenance Officer on 1st February. Mr Banks will be well known to a number of parents. His children attended Lower Park and he has carried out a number of ‘handyman’ jobs for us in the past as well as being involved in helping out at many PTA and school events. He has also been very active in the community as a Beaver / Cubs helper. I am sure that everyone will welcome Mr Banks to the team at Lower Park and wish him success here.

School Council
What active School Council members we have this year! At their meeting this week, they have placed the school flag firmly in their sites.

Not only have they convinced everyone to replace the flagpole but they have arranged a ‘design-a-school-flag’ competition for the school, from which the winning entry will be made into the new school flag (and hang on the new flagpole).

They gave out the rules of the competition to the children in Community Hour today and I have given them the green light to choose the most appropriate flag design from the entrants. Children may well have brought home their designs to work on this weekend. Well done School Council!

This Week at
Lower Park
  • On Monday, we began the week with a new SEAL topic, ‘Good to be Me!’ It is all about realising that we are all special with at least one talent or skill . Over the next few weeks, we will develop this concept and also learn to appreciate the talents of others.
  • Today in the Community Hour, Mandy Simpson and Suzi, a new recruit to to Poynton’s Community police spoke to the children As ever, Mandy took a topical issue - ‘dangerous dogs’ - and talked to the children about police dogs and guide dogs.

  • Mrs Beaumont reached the age of sixty today. The children presented her with a huge bouquet of flowers and a special vase. Congratulations Mrs Beaumont!
Ilam Meeting for Year 5 Parents
Once again, this year the children from Year 5 will be enjoying a trip to Ilam to extend their studies in science and geography.

There is a meeting on Monday evening, 15th January at 7.00pm in the school hall for all Year 5 parents.

The details of the trip will be discussed and important forms and information distributed.

NSPCC – Sponsored Event
We restrict large sponsored events to one per year. This year, we propose to help the National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children. On Friday, its representative will be talking to the children about its work and about the sponsored event. I am sure you will feel that this is a very worthy cause. You can expect the children to bring home the information next Friday. Thank you for your support.

Next Week at Lower
Park
  • On Monday, at 7.00pm there is a meeting for parents of children going to Ilam.
  • PTA Committee meeting at 8.00pm.
  • Mr Cresswell (parent) is demonstrating how to build a wall (in our hall) for the children in Key Stage 1 to help illustrate their current topic of buildings.
  • Buildings Committee meeting at 4.15pm.
  • Over 50 children from KS2 are visiting Manchester United Football Club on Wednesday.
Manchester Utd Trip
There are still two places left on the trip that takes place on Wednesday next week for those children who have not visited before. If your child would like to go, please see Mr Parry. The children who are going will need soccer kit under a tracksuit and trainers should be worn for indoor football. The children need to bring a packed lunch with a non-fizzy drink. Children can bring a camera (but children will be responsible for looking after it) and up to £5.00 spending money for the club shop. The bus should return to school at approximately 3.45pm and we would ask you to park on the side of the road opposite to school to allow the bus to get through.

Alternative Gifts – for All Celebrations
As detailed in an earlier Beacon, St. George's Parish Church is raising funds for a South Indian village school, visited by the McLaren family last year. If you are struggling to buy a worthwhile present for the person who seems to have everything, why not buy a present for South Indian villagers who have next to nothing - and send it as a card-gift to delight your friend or family member?

There is a choice of gifts and cards to suit all occasions; where the money will go straight to Mary Kalyani and the pupils, staff and families at the Bright School.

For more information please contact: Rev Rob McLaren - 850524 or Rita Evans - 850298.
