Dear Parents,
Hopefully by now, you will have read a copy of the OFSTED report that was sent home on Monday. If not, a copy can now be accessed by clicking here. NB You may need a piece of software called Adobe Reader to open the report - you can download it for free here.
It will also be published on the OFSTED website from next Monday 14th April.
In my last Beacon I wrote, “I really hope the fantastic work of the school will be captured in the one day inspection.” I am really pleased that the inspection did just that. Mrs Drake, the lead inspector, has inspected over 300 schools and was extremely thorough. She has written the report in a reader friendly way, unlike many reports I have read before and she has placed the children at the heart of it. I am delighted that we are able to repay your unstinting trust and support in the school with a report that endorses Lower Park as an outstanding school. The whole Lower Park Community can be justifiably proud.
During this academic year our three assistant headteachers, Miss Lindley, Mrs Gallagher and Mr Parry have done a magnificent job leading the school, following the retirement of Mrs Beckett (former deputy) and the maternity leave of Mrs Ripper (assistant head). Each one has had an opportunity to be ‘in-charge’ if I am not in school and all three were exceptional during the Ofsted inspection. This term, Mrs Gallagher will take the responsibility of being ‘in-charge’ should I be absent.
The longer term development of the school requires a deputy headteacher to be in post and I am pleased to inform you that, following interviews, the governors have appointed Mrs Cathy Beddows as the new deputy headteacher. Mrs Beddows will take up her new post in September 2008. Presently, she is a deputy head of a school in Stockport.
Mrs Beddows has many strengths and expertise to add to the talented staff team at Lower Park.
I know parents will want to know if the school will be affected by the proposed industrial action. The response from Lower Park teachers is that they feel there is a case to answer from the Government but on this occasion, they do not wish to compromise the children’s education. The school will, therefore, remain open on 24th April.
Collecting Tesco Vouchers / Sainsbury Vouchers Over Easter |
To date we have collected and counted 10,000 Tesco vouchers. Thank you! Please keep sending them in – last year we collected 36,000 and bought 7 digital cameras, a printer and software. Please post them in the Tesco box next to Mr Coulson’s office or give them to the Year 6 children in Mrs Gallagher’s class. The scheme ends on 11th May and we will carry on collecting for a short while after then.
Another reminder - you can order bedding plants through school. The advantage of doing so is that they will be delivered to your door on May 10th. You can pick up a yellow order form from the office.
We do, however, rely on a number of parents to help us with the deliveries on the day. If you can spare a couple of hours on 10th May at 8.00am, 9.00am or 10.00am to deliver the plants from school to local addresses, your assistance would be greatly appreciated. Please let Mrs Massey, our plant sale co-ordinator know, by ringing 01625 876699.
I would like to thank you for your support with this ‘challenge’ and I am pleased to inform you that it raised £230 – well done everyone and to Mr Parry for organising the activity.
A Bike Ride to Make a Difference + A Non-Uniform Day |
I have to admire the courage and determination of two of our parents, Mrs Calthorpe and Mrs Rowarth who intend to cycle from London to Paris in September. They are doing all this in aid of the fight against Muscular Sclerosis. With this in mind, we are scheduling a non-uniform day (orange or nearest to orange is the MS colour – but anything bright) for Friday 25th April and suggest that the children could bring in £1 for this worthy cause.

Mrs Calthorpe and Mrs Rowarth spoke to the children In the Community Hour this morning about their bike ride. They brought along a DVD appropriate for primary children, about Muscular Sclerosis.
Attached to this Beacon is a sponsor form for those wishing to raise further monies for MS. Although I have mentioned this in assembly, please ensure that children have your permission to approach anyone for sponsorship (Stranger Danger!). Any monies collected should be forwarded to school by the end of this half term – 23rd May. We wish both ladies every success with their venture.
The children were literally jumping for joy yesterday with the charismatic Freddy (aka Phil). This is the second visit by him and it was a fantastic session for the children. We hope to develop regular, Freddy-type, after school activities at some time in the future. I’m sure everyone, especially the children, would love to have Freddy back at Lower Park soon.
Family Photograph Opportunity |
A number of parents have taken up the opportunity to have Neil Barratt Studios create professional photographs of their families. The offer, initiated through the PTA, is still ongoing and the information packs are available through school.
Our book fair arrives in school next week and will be open for parents to purchase books in the hall, after school on Wednesday, Thursday Friday and Monday (21st). A representative from the Book Fair will speak to the children in an assembly on Wednesday and this will herald the start of the Book Fair.
Thank you to all parents of children who started the Year 6 revision programme so enthusiastically. There is great support from everybody. Please keep it up!
Author-Signed, Children’s Books |
Nic Perring, the children’s author who led workshops in World Book week, has offered to sign his books for anyone wishing to buy one (this proved popular during book week).
- The Eggs and Flowers Service took place before the holiday and I know how well the donations were appreciated. I have received a letter from St Anne’s Hospice thanking the school for the flowers, “the wards were beautiful.”
- The Ilam trip was very successful before Easter. Look out for the photographs on our Website and the children’s work soon to be displayed. Thank you to the staff who gave their time so readily to accompany the trip.
- This week we had a PTA committee meeting on Tuesday and arrangements are well underway for the plant sale, disco and summer fair that are all taking place this term.
- Yesterday, Freddy Fit led five workshops for all the children in the school – exhausting but very enjoyable.
- Today, Mrs Calthorpe and Mrs Rowarth talked to the children in the Community Hour about their MS bike ride (see above).
- There is an informal governors meeting on Tuesday at 6.00pm.
- On Tuesday there will be Cross Country at Moorfield, returning to school approx 5.30pm.
- The book fair will be open after school in the hall on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday.
- On Thursday ‘A’, ‘B’ and Girls football teams will play away at Moorfield, returning to school approx 5pm.
You can download copies of the menu for next week here.
