Dear Parents,

World Book Day

World Book Day has been more like World Book Week. The variety of ways children have found to express their favourite book has been wonderful. From KS1 and FS, children, all the entries have been on display outside the staff room this week and the display has grown daily. The winners of the competition were Eve P with The Owl and the Pussycat, Rachael L with Star Struck, Anastasia M with Cinderella’s Shoe and Isabelle B with The little Mermaid.

Yesterday the children and staff came to school dressed differently for World Book Day. In both KS1,2 and Foundation there was a record number of children dressing as their favourite book character. Some staff even remained in their costumes for parents’ evening. In KS2, homework over the following week will include asking the children to complete a competition about book authors with a £10 book token for the winning entry.

The whole purpose has been to raise the profile and enjoyment of reading and, I hope, it has provided a great deal of interest in books for the children.
Mothers’ Day Service
We would like to remind you that the Mothers’ Day service begins at 2.00pm next Friday 12th March. Due to fire regulations we have to restrict attendance to one adult per family in Key Stage 1 and Foundation.

This is a wonderful occasion and the ‘mums’ will be invited to a tea party after the service. Children will be making cakes etc. next week and are already very excited about treating their ‘mums’.
Parent Council Meeting
The next meeting of the Parent Council is next Tuesday 9th March at 8.00pm. If you wish items to be included, please let your class representative know by Monday 8th at the latest.
Race Night Update from Chris Myers, PTA Chairman
A huge thank you to all Parents who have ‘bought’ and named their horses for the forthcoming PTA Race Night to be held on March 20th. An unbelievable response and some imaginative horse and jockey names have been received!

Phase 1: Buying and naming a Horse and Jockey for £2.50.
The first priority for us was to sell all the horses for the 8 Races and I’m delighted to say that this has virtually been completed in record time. There are only one or two horses to be named, so if you would like the chance of winning a fabulous prize, please check remaining availability at the Office.

Phase 2: Ticket sales.
This event has certainly provoked an exceptional response following the success of last years Race Night. I have had many conversations with parents who are already planning who will be on their table for the night! I have also been asked if friends not connected to the School can attend – yes of course, everybody is welcome, the more the merrier.

Initial ticket sales have been extremely encouraging. We have a maximum capacity of 100 for the night, so unfortunately we are allocating tickets on a first-come, first-served basis. I would therefore suggest all parents who are interested in attending to please purchase your tickets as soon as possible to avoid disappointment. This will also help us to organise the Catering and Bar requirements for the night.

Tickets are available from the school Office, priced at a recession busting £5.00 per person, and include a hearty Ploughman’s Supper AND your first drink from the licensed bar.

I can assure you that this event is FULL of excitement and has an electric atmosphere from the very first race.

Hope to see you there and thank you for your continued support of the PTA. Chris Myers.
Invitation from Local Churches for Our Children to Sing
I have been asked by both Poynton Baptist Church and St George’s Church to invite families and children along to sing the songs from our Pop Connection CD in church.

On Sunday 14th March, at Poynton Baptist Church the children have been asked to sing the songs from the CD in their Mothers’ Day Service which begins at 10.30am and finishes at 12.00. Whilst mums and dads are invited to stay for the service too, Mrs Marshall and Mrs Pilkington will supervise a limited number of children whose parents cannot stay for the service.

A letter will come home asking if you and / or your children will be coming along.

St George’s Church also would like our children to sing a couple of songs from the CD during the Palm Sunday Service, 28th March, at 6.30pm. Mrs Jones will co-ordinate that occasion and will send out another letter beforehand. Of course, parents will be invited to that service too.
Commendation Award Winners
Last week the theme was again, ‘Respect for the School Building.’ Those who won Commendations this week were: Ella C, Faye C, Leah D, Archie W, Emma C, Sophie D, George N, Abigail R, Rebecca C, Charlie K and Libby W.

Well done to all the award winners!

This week the theme has been, ‘Good Behaviour and Good Manners.
Healthy Eating
the children about which foods are good for you and those that are not so good. I have highlighted the importance of healthy snacks – for example, eating fruit rather than unhealthier crisps and chocolate every day. Many children have wonderfully prepared healthy eating lunchboxes too, but there are some who have foods which are not so healthy. Please would you join with us in promoting healthy eating, both at snack time and in packed lunches. Thank you for your support.

Parents’ Evenings
A word of thanks for attending our parents’ evenings this week. The benefits to your child are high when parents support their children’s learning and track their progress. It was also good to taste samples of our school dinners and I am able to thank Pam Edwards, our temporary cook, for providing parents with this opportunity.
SATs Meeting for Year 6 Parents
There will be a meeting for parents of children in Year 6 on Thursday 18th March at 7.00pm. Teachers will give out information about the SATS tests in May and outline the revision programme the children will be following. It is very important that parents attend.
Tesco Voucher Collection
In addition to collecting Sainsbury vouchers, we have now begun to collect Tesco vouchers. In previous years, we have used Tesco vouchers to buy much needed computers and ICT equipment. If you do shop at Tesco, please collect the vouchers and place them in the collecting box outside Mr Coulson ’s door. Thank you in anticipation.

Community Cup Football
On Monday the school football team participated in the 'Community Cup, Play Off Day.' In spite of a spirited performance, we did not qualify for the next round. The children deserve to feel very proud of their efforts and we wish them all the best in their remaining league games. Well done to Alex, Bobby, Robert, Tom, Kyran, Niall and Ed. Thank you too, for the superb support from parents.

Year 6 Parents to Lunch – Next Wednesday

On Wednesday next week, we are inviting our Year 6 parents to have lunch with their children. If you are having lunch, please come to the entrance hall at 11.45am.
School Band Playing In Assembly
On Friday 12th March, the school swing band will be playing their latest tunes in the Community Hour. All parents are welcome to come and listen to them at 9.00am.
Thanks to the Litter Pickers
Just a quick word of thanks to Mrs Kerins, one of our parents, who, with members of her family, managed to clear about 60% of the field and all of the path over the bridge to the Jones estate.

7 bin bags full of rubbish were collected. They had to give up when one of the younger ones jumped into puddle up to his middle in mud. They intend to finish the job on another sunny day. Thank you - we all appreciate what you have done. Any more volunteers?

Changing Our Policy – Can You Help?

The Governing Body is seeking the views of any interested people regarding the formation of the School’s new Disability Equality Scheme and Accessibility Plan.

If you know someone who attends or uses our school facilities or you are disabled in any way, your views would particularly help us to be better informed. You may wish to discuss relevant aspects and can do so personally at school or by contacting the school (FAO Mr Coulson), by telephone, letter or email:- (head@lowerpark.cheshire.sch.uk).

A small working group is being formed – you may even wish to be part of that – just let us know.
