**Summer Fair 2008 Photos**
Relive all the fun of the fair through a selection of photographs in our fair gallery.
A Day at the Seaside *Photo Gallery*
In the second last week of June the school playground and field became a beach.
Children laid out towels, played in sand pits and enjoyed traditional beach games. Take a look at the Seaside Photo Gallery here.
Roman Times
Lower Park School pupils in Years 3 and 4 recently had a fascinating day going back in time to the Roman era. To enhance their history topic they were taken into Manchester to meet a ‘real live’ Roman soldier.
They visited the Museum of Science and Industry and took part in several workshops to find out more about the Roman way of life, including how to march in Latin, apply Roman hair gel and how to recognise a Briton!
A Massive Cheer for Our Champion
Sophie, a Year 4 pupil from school, recently won the National Under 9 Individual Cheerleading Championships.
This fabulous accolade was the result of many long and dedicated hours put in by Sophie and her supporting family.
Eggs and Flowers
Key Stage One and Foundation Stage put on a magnificent set of performances to tell the Easter story. Now an annual event, the 'Eggs and Flowers Service' delighted friends and family and resulted in literally hundreds of chocolate eggs being donated for less fortunate children connected with 'The Mustard tree' charity in Manchester. Patients at St Ann’s Hospice in Cheadle received numerous of cheerful bouquets of flowers donated by children from Lower Park.
World Book Week
As part of this year's activities the school was lucky to be visited by children’s author, Nik Perring who ran writing workshops for the children.
The week also saw the arrival of class teddy bears to help diary writing! More about the bears in this newsletter. On World Book Day itself, pupils were encouraged to come to school dressed as their favourite book characters. Even the staff dressed up!
You can see a selection of photos of the characters on our World Book Day page.
Poynton Golf Club Donation
We were delighted to receive a donation of £300 from Poynton Golf Club. The club conducts fundraising activities throughout the year and makes an annual donation to a school of its choice.
(Pictured: Left to right Martin Crank (President) Ian Coulson (Headteacher) and John Duke (Treasurer) with Lower Park pupils)
The donation will go towards a sound system to be used in assemblies and presentations enabling all children to hear and be heard more easily.
Lower Park School ‘Star Awards’
Following a highly successful term at school the staff faced a difficult decision in order to choose the candidates for the prestigious and highly prized Caroline Corlett and Chris Hammond trophies.
The two selected pupils were Molly (Year 2) and Ella (Year6), who have shown a consistently high standard in work, attitude and citizenship.
Christmas Show - The Wizard of Oz
Another great performance from Key Stage 2 to match last year's Bugsy Malone. Apart from the cast, each class took a key role in delivering a scene from the show. *** View the photo gallery here. ***
What Would You Like for Christmas?
Leaving the reindeer back home, Santa, dropped in to the Lower Park Christmas Fair to meet some of the children and give out a few early Christmas gifts.
The fair was a great success and raised £2700+. This is truly, a magnificent amount of money and one which will provide, amongst other much needed things, a sound system for the hall so everyone can hear the children (and staff) when they are speaking in assemblies etc.
Lower Park's 'Parcel Force'
Our pupils have been keen to help others by filling shoeboxes with Christmas goodies to support 'The Samaritans Purse' charity.
Around two hundred and fifty boxes have been donated to help disadvantaged children have a more enjoyable Christmas this year.
"And he painted matchstick men and ...
To enhance the work they have been doing in art, over eighty pupils from Lower Park School recently enjoyed a day at the Lowry. They have been studying the artist of the same name, but got a chance to get up close and personal with some of his work.
The children spent their time involved in workshops focusing on landscape, buildings scale and perspective. They also enjoyed making sketches of portraits in order to develop the work they will continue back in the classroom.
Rain Fails to Dampen Team Spirit
Despite the awful weather that caused the Sports Day date to be changed the Junior events took place on Friday morning the 20th of July.
Even though the grass was wet and the field partly waterlogged none of the children seemed to mind getting wet for their team. Competing in events ranging from the obstacle course, sprint, baton relay, egg and spoon and sack race to the slow bike race, 'Coppice' team above were overall winners.
Beware of the Bugs - New Gallery and Slideshow Click HERE.
Huge snails, massive centipedes, caterpillars, stick insects, a scorpion and the big scary tarantula spider - all in Mrs Martin's classroom.
But don't worry we didn't have to call in 'pest control', they all belong to the 'Bug Man', who paid Key Stage 1 a visit recently.
Perfectly in Tune
One of the school's many assets is the school band. Formed and conducted by Lower Park's own bass guitar 'legend', headteacher Mr Coulson, they practice hard outside school hours and perform a string of hits.

For the second year running all the hard work paid off as they were invited to perform at the 2007 Cheshire Show.
Ace Performers
On Tuesday 19th June Lower Park played its first competitive tennis match at Macclesfield Tennis Club against schools in the area. Although the team came third overall both Cameron and Tom won all their matches and were the top boys. Rachael and Emma played for the girls team.
Another Fantastic Award for School
Lower Park is 'quality' and that's official. The school has gained the Inclusion Quality Mark. What is it? What does it mean? Read a preview in the LP Beacon and download the full report HERE - it makes very good reading. (Note: you may need to download the free Adobe Reader to view this report - you can get it here).
Cross Country Runners - Race to Victory - see photos
In the South Stockport Schools' Cross Country Running Championships, Lower Park were overall winners in the Year 3/4 girls' race and in the Year 5/6 boys' race and 3 of our runners came 1st.
Find out more and see photos of our winning teams in the Sports and Clubs section on our website.
Skating on thin 'ice' - in the hall?
Sounds strange but true. The PTA asked children to get their skates on and in doing so raise funds for the school. The rink was made up of what looked like large square jigsaw pieces and the event proved to be a success without too many tumbles.

Bully's Paradise - Gallery
On Friday 23rd March all the children enjoyed a brilliant performance by a visiting theatre group, who really got the anti-bullying message across to the children.
You can see a selection of photos from the performance here.
Science IS Fun - Gallery
At the beginning of March the school hall became a science lab for the day, as children in year 6 experimented with the science of materials.

Find out more and see photos of the Lower Park young scientists here.
Mrs Beaumont Retires.....
After twenty two years, Lower Park's school caretaker, Sheila Beaumont has finally hung up her mop and dusters and handed over her collection of keys to Andrew Banks.

For many years Sheila 'commuted' to and from school on a trusty old bike, so it was no surprise that she asked for a shiny new one as a retirement present. Find out about Mrs B's final days at school here.
.....and Mr Banks takes over the keys.
Mr Andrew Banks started as our new Site Maintenance Officer on 1st February.

Andrew's children attended Lower Park and he has carried out a number of 'handyman' jobs for the school as well as being involved in helping out at many PTA and school events. He has also been very active in the community as a Beaver/Cubs helper.
'All the Fun of the Fair'?
If you can motivate people and love a challenge - there's a golden opportunity for you to take the reins of one of the school's annual highlights - the Summer Fair.

Find out more about the exciting role in this newsletter. AND to remind you what fun you could have, click on the photo above and look back at the 2006 event.

Superb Playground Equipment Opening
On 28th June, the same day as the Summer Fair, our new 'Trim Trail' was officially opened.
Find out more in the 27th June Lower Park Beacon.
A 'Classy' Beach
To go along with the seaside theme, part of Mrs Carding and Mrs Marshall's classroom was turned into a mini beach complete with deckchairs, sand, pebbles, parasol, gazebo, buckets and spades. If you can't take a trip to the beach in person take a look at some of the photos here.
PTA Go Potty!
As part of their annual plant sale, PTA members and parents sorted over 900 boxes of bedding plants into over 160 orders and delivered them across the whole of Poynton.
This year was the best yet -
raising over £1500 for the School! A huge thanks to all the parents who volunteered to deliver the plant sale order forms and helped on the day.
School Supports Charity Bike Ride
Lower Park School pupils and parents are always very generous and following a very special assembly this proved no exception. Sisters Debbie Rowarth and Trish Calthorpe explained how their personal physical challenge of cycling from London to Paris would benefit sufferers of Multiple Sclerosis.

Children at the school were told more about the MS Society and how funds raised would support people in their own homes, fund further research, provide a MS phone helpline, give grants to adapt people’s homes and provide respite breaks for MS sufferers and their carers. In response to this, the children organised an out of uniform day, dressing in the MS Society’s colour of orange, and raised just under £250 If you wish to add to this figure, you can make an online donation here.
FIRE!!!
At Community Hour on Friday 25th March Mr Mullin, one of our parents, spoke to the children about his job as a fire-fighter. He managed to dress Mr Coulson in a complete smoke protection outfit – and he had to be 'rescued' from a burning building by Daniel W! Well done Daniel and thank you Mr Mullin!
Trophy Winners
Everyone at school looks forward to the end of term, but at Lower Park it is always the time when two special trophies are awarded to outstanding pupils.
Harry, from Year 2 was awarded the Caroline Corlett trophy, while Caitlin, from Year 6, was presented with the Chris Hammond trophy. Both children were nominated by their teachers as a result of their fantastic contribution to school life, attitude and behaviour.
Beautiful Blooms
Following a highly successful 'Eggs and Flowers Service' at Lower Park School, pupils Tom and Niamh delivered literally hundreds of fabulous flowers to the patients at St Ann's Hospice in Cheadle.
On hand to receive and distribute the beautiful blooms was Melanie Gait
Magical Potions and Mad Science
At the end of February all the children were treated to a day of 'weird and wonderful' scientific experiments with Philip Rose from Sci Tech. Children interacted with temperatures way below freezing, saw rain that didn’t wet anything and 'drank' frothing liquids – all with no ill effects.
Meant to motivate children’s thirst for science, this certainly was a lesson that the children will remember for a long time.
A 'Hat Full' of Awards for the School
It's been a record breaking time for Lower Park School’s staff and pupils as they have just been awarded a third award in less than twelve months!! With the Quality and Inclusion Mark Award being given to Lower Park, the school makes it a ‘hat trick’ by adding it to the Activemark Sport (Gold) and Healthy School awards.
(Pictured: Mr Ashley Parry (PE co-ordinator), Mr Ian Coulson (Head teacher) and Mrs Jill Daniels (DT co-ordinator) with children from year 6).
The PDA cluster of Lower Park, Vernon, Lostock, Worth, Adlington, Disley and the High School are the first group of schools to receive the IQM award and as such recognise that this is an outstanding achievement.
Have You Got the X-Factor?
The Junior Talent Show is always well received and this year proved no exception – Lower Park has indeed got talent!!
From a wide ranging programme, the winner was Tom G from Year 6 with a highly entertaining Abba song and dance, a Year 6 girls' group with a routine from 'Grease', and Sophie from Year 4 with a wonderful gymnastics display.
The staff, as usual got involved, dressing up and performing the Munchkins scene. Mr Coulson was a huge hit in his role as the scarecrow.
Certified Swimmers
Following a term's lessons at Poynton Leisure Centre, we were proud to congratulate a number of children who had achieved success with their swimming and received badges and certificates in assembly.
Christmas Show - The Bossy Fairy!
All the oohs and aaahhs, colour, singing and dancing we all love to see at Christmas. Will we ever forget the forlorn look on the dejected face of ‘Snowflake’ or the tatty piece of tinsel who didn’t make the Christmas tree? The baubles, tinsels, fairy lights, Santas, nativity people and narrators really set off our Christmas.
*** View a larger version of this cast photo here. ***
Get a whiff of these!
The Friday before the Christmas Fair was named 'Silly Sock Day', but there was a catch. In return for being able to wear their multi-coloured
'foot warmers'
children were asked to bring to school, cakes and chocolates to sell at the Fair.
A big thankyou to everyone who joined in, including members of staff. Now those are socks that might have got up your nose!
Kingswood 2007 - Year 6 Residential
**Watch Video Clips and View Photos**
Assault courses, fencing, quad biking, laser battles and the creation of computer simulated games sounds much better than class lessons, but the children found the activities just as challenging.
The assault course was just one of the challenging activities. Find out what else the children got up to in the Kingswood Photo Album. This year we even got videos of the assault course. (Note: you may have to download the free real media player here to play the clips).

Lower Park Remembers Chris Hammond
This year pupils broke with the tradition of bringing fruit and vegetables to St George's Church to give thanks at Harvest time. After hearing that Gill Hammond had raised a lot of money for Marie Curie Cancer Care, they decided to follow in her footsteps by setting themselves a task to raise money for the charity. Chris Hammond, a former pupil of Lower Park died ten years ago and his mother, Gill, set herself the challenge of climbing 14 peaks in one day – one for every year of his life.
Having been inspired by Gill’s challenge, the staff and children decided that everyone in the junior department should be set a task that could be tested at the end of a week. The tasks ranged from learning every county and its position in England, to recognising every European flag.
The children presented their completed tasks to parents at St George’s Church and representatives from the charity were delighted to receive a cheque for £253.
Lower Park Is Officially 'A Healthy School'
Lower Park School is once again celebrating after successfully gaining the Healthy Schools Award. Healthier school meals, healthy snacks, increased PE and after school activities and the walking buses have all been introduced as part of this bid and, most of all, the children are very aware of the importance of living a healthy life style.
The annual Design and Technology Challenge week brought the bid to a conclusion, and Ms Kath Lees announced the result in a whole school assembly before presenting the award to Head teacher Ian Coulson. Mr Coulson, who was delighted with the result, thanked the Year 6 children who led the challenge, Mrs Jill Daniels who co-ordinated the 'Challenge Week' and to Mr Ashley Parry, who led the Healthy Schools bid. The 'Healthy School' logo will now proudly appear on the school letterheads beside The Active Mark for Sport and Inclusion Quality Mark.
Manic Mangoes win Infants' Sports Day
Finally the infants got their chance to show off their sporting skills when, after weather 'stopped play' on Friday 20th, they competed on Monday 23rd in the playground. Below is a photo of the overall winners.
DT Never Tasted So Good!
Design Technology Challenge Week is always an exciting time in school and this year is no exception. The Year 6 children have co-ordinated the entire school in the hope of receiving the Healthy Schools Award.
Everyone has been designing, making and evaluating different types of healthy food. These have included Smoothies, breakfast bars, a variety of salads and breads. Yummy!
All the Fun of the Fair
Well it might have poured with rain but that didn't stop the 'indoors' Summer Fair putting a smile on the faces of those who attended. Apart from the usual stalls, music from the school band and the choir performing there was an odd vegetable competition and a miniature garden design contest - even Bob the Builder turned up in one!
Find out more about the fair in this newsletter.
Caught in possession of police equipment!

At a recent visit from the local 'police squad' the children were given a lesson in antisocial behaviour, bullying and safe use of the internet. Don't worry Mr Coulson and four of our pupils were soon released from the long arm of the law, as the only thing they were guilty of was volunteering to take part in this 'wanted poster'!
PTA go Potty!
On Saturday 12th May the pavements around the school gate resembled a small garden centre as the annual PTA Plant Sale 'blossomed'. Several volunteers arrived from around 7.00am to sort out the potted plant orders and others arrived in cars to deliver them all over Poynton.
As ever it was well organised and a big thanks to everyone who gave up some of their Saturday morning to help. We'll let you know how much was raised soon.
Above is a selection of some of the volunteers - there were a lot more but they were out on their plant deliveries.
Easter Story Exhibition- Gallery
One of the highlights in March 2007 was a school visit to St George's Church in the village, where a special exhibition was created to tell the Easter story. You can see some photos of the visit HERE or click on the image below.

Award Winning Pupils
Two of the proudest pupils at Lower Park School must be Isabella in Year 2 and Adam from Year 6 after scooping two of the most prized trophies on offer.

Isabella received the Caroline Corlett award from previous winner Matthew and Adam received the Chris Hammond trophy from previous winner Emma. The awards are in recognition of their outstanding attitude, manners and commitment to schoolwork.
Both awards are presented on a termly basis in memory of Caroline, a former secretary and Chris a former pupil of the school.
Comic Relief - the Big One- Gallery
More madness and plenty of red noses - take a look at the photo gallery HERE.

World Book Day
As usual this literacy event proved to be a great success.

Key Stage 1 children enjoyed dressing up as kings, knights and princesses as they acted out parts from popular stories. Find out more in this Lower Park Beacon.
Top Sports Award for School
In January 2007 it was announced that the school has received a top sports honour for the second time.
The Active Mark for Sport is awarded to schools who are judged as having the highest standards of sport in the curriculum and after school activities. Find out more about the award in a January 2007 edition of The Beacon.
Christmas Shows- Gallery
As ever the children excelled this year with fantastic productions of Bugsy Malone, complete with 'splurge guns', and The Hopeless Camel.

See and download photos of both performances here.
