"We are the champions, we are the champions...of the world"

Well maybe not quite the world but that's how the Lower Park Cross Country team felt as they won South Stockport Cross Country for Schools Championship for the third consecutive year.

This photo will take a short while to appear because it's full of medal winners.

If it doesn't appear straight away you can always go further down the page and read more details of this fantastic achievement. You can also read an exclusive interview by New Web Reporter Rachel with two of our star runners.

Lower Park Cross Country Team March 2004

The pupils were delighted by the 'runaway' success after both teams in the Year 5 and 6 category took first place, whilst the Year 3 and 4 girls were runners up. The points accumulated by all the Lower Park's teams were sufficient to win them overall first place. The team, trained by coach Mr Hetherington, have turned up week after week to train in all weathers since September. As PE teacher Ashley Parry said, "This is not an overnight achievement. The children have trained hard and show great commitment. They should feel very proud that this effort has paid off."

Year 6 pupil, Becky was singled out for special mention as she has taken the first place for her age group since taking part every year for the past four years. Her younger sister, Molly, who is still only in Year 2, was drafted into the Year 3 and 4 girls' team at the last minute to replace an injured teammate.

EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW

Rachel is a new web reporter and has carried out this exclusive interview for the Lower Park Times with two of our cross country stars Becky and Laura.

Rachel: What was it like winning the girls 5/6 race?

Becki: It was a very rubbish start, but I felt pleased because I won the race in yr 3, 4, 5 and now yr 6 and no-one has ever done that before.

Rachel: Laura, what was it like when you found out you had won the age group over all?

Laura: It was sort of exciting because it gave our school a chance to win over all.

Rachel: Is it very rewarding to win after all your hard training?

Laura: Yes, because we've trained so hard for this race all year, and its fun as well.

Becki: Yeah, because I train out of school as well at Stockport Harriers on Tuesdays and Thursdays every week.

Rachel: How do you feel about winning a "hat trick"?

Becki: I feel over-whelmed and lost for words.

Laura: I think it's really funny because the people who announce the winners must be thinking "And the winners are…..oh not again… Lower Park".

Rachel: What's your advice for people who want to run?

Laura: Don't eat any thing two hours before your race and the night before eat lots of carbohydrates!!

Becki: You have to drink plenty of fluids before the race and if you get a stitch breathe in through your nose and slowly out through your mouth.

Becki and Laura: And remember to have lots of fun!!!!!!!!

Rachel: And what do you think of Lower Park?

Becki: Who rock?

Laura: Lower Park rock.

Becki and Laura: TOO BAD, TOO BAD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
