Safe Surfing for Parents and Children

When logging onto the Internet, you will be joining a vast world wide computer network. Material from all over the world is both educational and entertaining, allowing you to communicate with and learn about people from many other countries. It is undoubtedly an exciting and rapidly growing tool that is used by millions everyday for work and leisure.

The Internet is unique in that it is not accountable to any organisation or government. Due to the lack of central control, some people may be wary about the dangers that it may pose. The benefits far outweigh the dangers, but as some users find it a useful avenue for offensive or illegal material, it is essential that we teach our children about the potential hazards and how to avoid them.

Cyber Safe and Sense

1 Never give out any personal details. This means your name, address, passwords. (If you are shopping, make sure you are dealing with a bona fide company before giving out credit card details.

2 Never meet someone you have contacted on the Internet.

3 Someone online may not be who they say they are. If you are worried or feel uncomfortable in a chat room, get out. Children should tell their parents about it.

4 Never open attachments, accept e-mails or download files from organisations or people you don't know and trust. They may contain offensive material or viruses.

5 Keeping the computer in a family room allows family surfing and can help to monitor material and the length of time spent online.

6 Remember to maintain friendships and activities offline.

Using the Internet should be a positive experience. Close parental supervision, accompanied by agreed rules should help to ensure this. You may also wish to purchase software tools for greater protection.
