Kettlewell
is a small village, about twelve miles from Skipton. We were told
that the Youth Hostel where we were staying has had lots of uses
over the years, but the best thing for us was that we had complete
use of it for our trip.
|
For
the teachers, the planning and organisation had started over six months
ago, but for the children it was simple - they were going on a three
day residential to Kettlewell in the Yorkshire Dales, and they couldn't
wait any longer!!!
After a two hour journey to the Youth Hostel, unpacking and a spot
of lunch the activities began. |
|
Wednesday
afternoon
The children were split into five groups for
team building activities. Electric Fence,Apple Pie Bed, Blindfold
Navigation, Kettlewell Rope Trick and the Crocodile Swamp.
|
| Electric
Fence:
Using only a plank of wood, the team had to cross the 'electric fence'.
|
 |
 |
The
'electric fence' is over a metre high,
and the children had to work as a team to scale it, without anyone
or anything touching it. |
| Many
hands make light work, and with careful movement the teams survived
and moved on to another activity. |
 |
 |
Apple
Pie Bed:
This challenge involved getting as many children in the team to stand
on a standard sized mattress, and then turning it over without anyone
touching the ground. The record was seven! |
| Blindfold
Navigation(not
pictured): With each member of the team blindfolded and crawling behind
each other along the ground, the children had to navigate an obstacle
course. The idea was to talk to the people in front and behind you
to negotiate each obstacle safely. |
| Kettlewell
Rope Trick:
Blindfolded and disorientated, the teams attempted to create 2-D shapes
in the field using only a rope. |
 |
 |
This
proved to be more difficult than it sounds. |
| Teamwork
and communication were the keys to success with this task. |
 |
 |
Crocodile
Swamp: Using
only two planks, the team had to get from one 'bank' to the other,
using the stepping stones. |
| If
anyone or anything touched the 'water', the crocodiles would bite
and the whole team had to restart the challenge. |
