'Stockport
at War'
As part of their history work, all the children from the Junior Department have visited Vernon Park Museum and the Air Raid Shelters in Stockport. The youngsters have been studying the lives of children during World War Two and trying to appreciate how difficult life must have been. The day included understanding rationing, preparing for air raids and looking at articles from a wartime home. It really enhanced the work done in school. The pupils were asked to dress in clothes appropriate to the period and even bring a packed lunch using wartime rations. Here we have put together a photobook of the Year 6 visit. More information about the air raid shelters can be found lower down this page.
Stockport
Air Raid Shelters have been carved into the natural sandstone cliffs
in Stockport Town Centre and are the largest purpose built World War
II civilian underground air raid shelters. They were boarded up after
the war, rediscovered 7 years ago and have been imaginatively restored
to give visitors the feel of the era. You
can step back in time to 1940s war-torn Britain and experience the sights
and sounds of Britain's home front. Click 'Lower Park Times' or News in the top left hand menu to return to the latest news. |
